Founded in 2015 by a dedicated Teacher of the Visually Impaired, House of Light, LLC is a mission-driven educational consulting firm providing specialized instruction, professional development, and innovative programming for blind and visually impaired students ages 3–21. About the Role
We are seeking a passionate and certified Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to join our team. In this role, you will provide specialized instruction tailored to meet the unique educational needs of students who are blind or visually impaired. You’ll work with students across a range of educational settings, collaborate with IEP teams, and support school districts in delivering high-quality, inclusive services.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver individualized instruction aligned with each student's IEP goals

Conduct and document Functional Vision Assessments and Learning Media Assessments

Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education teams, administrators, and families

Provide instruction in:

Low vision and visual efficiency skills

Academic and concept development
-
Orientation and mobility (preferred)
-
Daily living and sensory-motor skills
-
Communication and social-emotional development
-
Coordinate Braille/large print materials, technology, and adaptive tools

Utilize data and progress monitoring tools to drive instruction and interventions
-
Participate in IEP meetings, staff meetings, and family conferences
-
Supervise and guide classroom aides or paraprofessionals as needed
-
Maintain student engagement and a positive, inclusive classroom environment

Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with an endorsement in Blind/Visually Impaired (K–12)

Certification in Orientation & Mobility (preferred, but not required)

Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills

Passion for accessibility, inclusion, and educational equity

Orientation and Mobility Specialist
Now Hiring: Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS)
Location: Illinois | Schedule: Flexible (In-person, Virtual, or Hybrid)
Position: Part-time, Full-time, or Contractual

About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) to join our growing team. In this role, you will teach students with visual impairments the skills they need to travel safely and independently in a variety of environments—home, school, and community.
This position offers the chance to make a profound difference in students' independence and confidence, while working with a supportive and forward-thinking team of specialists.
Key Responsibilities
-
Provide individualized orientation and mobility instruction to students ages 3–21 with visual impairments
-
Conduct and document Orientation & Mobility evaluations
-
Teach travel-related skills, including:
-
Cane techniques and safety
-
Spatial and environmental awareness
-
Route planning and problem-solving
-
Use of public transportation and street crossings
-
-
Collaborate with IEP teams, TVIs, special education staff, families, and related service providers
-
Participate in the development and review of IEPs, including goals and accommodations
-
Monitor student progress and maintain clear, accurate documentation
-
Instruct students in the use of mobility aids, low vision devices, and GPS/assistive technology
-
Support students in accessing both indoor and outdoor environments confidently
-
Provide consultative services to school staff to support safe and inclusive learning spaces
-
Educate families and caregivers on how to reinforce O&M skills at home and in the community
Qualifications
-
Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist by ACVREP
-
Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) or eligibility to work in Illinois schools
-
Experience working with children and young adults with visual impairments
-
Strong communication, interpersonal, and documentation skills
-
Reliable transportation to travel between sites if needed
-

Paraprofessional

About the Role
We are seeking a compassionate, reliable, and licensed Paraprofessional to join our dedicated team. In this role, you will support students who are blind or visually impaired by assisting certified teachers and specialists in delivering instruction, fostering independence, and creating an inclusive learning environment.
You will work closely with Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs), Orientation and Mobility Specialists, classroom teachers, and other professionals to ensure that each student receives the support they need to thrive.
Key Responsibilities

Provide academic and functional support to students with visual impairments, ages 3–21
-
Assist with implementing instructional and mobility-related activities under the guidance of certified teachers and specialists
-
Prepare, adapt, and organize materials (including Braille/large print/visual supports) as needed
-
Promote student engagement, independence, and access to the general education curriculum
-
Support students during classroom instruction, transitions, lunch, recess, specials, and community outings
-
Assist with the use of assistive technology and adaptive equipment
-
Monitor student behavior and provide redirection or reinforcement strategies as needed
-
Maintain confidentiality and accurate documentation of student performance and progress
-
Collaborate with IEP team members to support student goals and accommodations
-
Participate in training and professional development opportunities provided by House of Light
Qualifications

Valid Paraprofessional License issued by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE)

Experience working with students with disabilities, especially those with visual impairments (preferred but not required)

Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills

Flexibility, patience, and a passion for inclusive education

Ability to take direction from certified teachers and work independently

Reliable transportation and willingness to travel between school sites (if needed)
